There is a captivating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino gambling is not legal. Eight casinos are established in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime spot, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; although, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of most borders.

The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, contains 150 one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga casino is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are 150 slots and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around resort and hotel compound that highlights numerous comforts on top of the casino, which provides 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 tables.
