There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just across the border from next door Thailand, where casino betting is not allowed. Eight casinos are established in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect destination, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are allegedly necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is correct of most borders.
The first Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling den, features one hundred and fifty slots and 60 tables. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational vacation and hotel compound that features many comforts accompanying the gambling den, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
