The entire process of living in Zimbabwe is something of a risk at the moment, so you could envision that there might be very little affinity for visiting Zimbabwe’s gambling halls. In reality, it seems to be working the other way around, with the desperate market circumstances leading to a higher desire to bet, to try and find a fast win, a way from the difficulty.

For the majority of the locals living on the tiny local money, there are 2 common types of betting, the national lottery and Zimbet. Just as with almost everywhere else on the globe, there is a national lottery where the odds of winning are remarkably small, but then the winnings are also remarkably high. It’s been said by market analysts who study the subject that the majority don’t buy a ticket with an actual belief of hitting. Zimbet is founded on one of the local or the British football leagues and involves determining the outcomes of future matches.

Zimbabwe’s gambling dens, on the other shoe, pamper the astonishingly rich of the country and sightseers. Up till a short while ago, there was a very substantial sightseeing business, centered on safaris and visits to Victoria Falls. The market woes and associated violence have carved into this market.

Amongst Zimbabwe’s gambling halls, there are 2 in the capital, Harare, the Carribea Bay Resort and Casino, which has 5 gaming tables and slot machines, and the Plumtree Casino, which has just the slot machines. The Zambesi Valley Hotel and Entertainment Center in Kariba also has just slot machines. Mutare contains the Monclair Hotel and Casino and the Leopard Rock Hotel and Casino, both of which contain table games, one armed bandits and video machines, and Victoria Falls has the Elephant Hills Hotel and Casino and the Makasa Sun Hotel and Casino, the pair of which have gaming machines and tables.

In addition to Zimbabwe’s gambling dens and the previously alluded to lottery and Zimbet (which is quite like a parimutuel betting system), there are a total of 2 horse racing complexes in the state: the Matabeleland Turf Club in Bulawayo (the second municipality) and the Borrowdale Park in Harare.

Since the economy has contracted by beyond 40% in recent years and with the associated poverty and bloodshed that has resulted, it is not known how well the sightseeing business which is the backbone of Zimbabwe’s gambling dens will do in the near future. How many of the casinos will survive until conditions get better is simply not known.
