There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is against the law. Eight gambling halls are based in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a prime spot, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The amazing capital acquired from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, investment sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of most borders.
The 1st Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slots and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the common table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around resort and hotel complex that contains many comforts aside from the gambling hall, which has ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight tables.
