There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling den gaming is not legal. Eight casinos are based in a generally tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime location, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; still, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are apparently necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is correct of many borders.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau gambling hall, features 150 slot machine games and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that features a number of conveniences accompanying the casino, which contains ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
