There is an interesting story to the Cambodia casinos that reside just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is against the law. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a relatively tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent location, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, features 150 slot machine games and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive vacation and hotel complex that highlights many luxuries accompanying the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and 88 table games.
